Video Demo: Overview of XAML authoring features in Blend and Visual Studio

Now that many of you have had the opportunity to check out Kirupa’s Visual Studio Toolbox episode on Channel 9 for visually building HTML apps using Blend you are probably wondering where is the video for XAML authoring? Look no further! I met with Robert Green last week and we walked through building out a simple Metro app starting with the Grid app project template. You can view the recording below (or download a high-quality MP4):

During this video I used both the XAML Designer in VS and Blend, highlighting the similarities and differences for each product. Highlights include some tips and tricks for quickly creating the object hierarchy, laying out your scene, adding animations and transitions, and new tooling specific to Metro app controls and app design.

Nice “lap around” video. Fast paced! Packed with LOTS of information. (In the last demo, the antarctica1.jpg picture didn’t show because the code snippet was coded to look for the picture in the Assets folder, and when the image was added to the project it was added a level up from that. So close.

Will Blend support collapsing blocks of XAML like the VS editor has the ability to do. This has been missing from the Blend product for too long. It would be nice to be able to collapse blocks of XAML when in XAML view in Blend in those scenarios where you have large resource files. Also, Shift+Tab is somewhat flaky in Blend 4, hopefully this is fixed in the new version as well.

Great presentation, even with almost one year old. Since I’m a developer that uses both Flash Builder 4.6 and Visual Studio 2012, there is some “new” options like states that were already being used in Flash Builder and that were, from my point of view, missing from VS. For me the best feature in VS 2012 is the debugger that is still very awesome, speccially the part were you can go back and test several values by forcing values to variables and testing in real time.
